Project brief:
The course targeted the understanding of a full project cycle from design to production that is fully conducted on a digital platform. The competition asked for a parametric pavilion serving as a café during the HBTQ Festival in Göteborg, taking into consideration the limitations and possibilities of different parts of the production chain from digital design to digital production. Design limitations included the type of material (corten or stainless steel), the amount of material (60m2), the maximum height (5m), the structure (self-supporting), safety (no extruding elements between 1 and 2m off the ground).

Proposal:
As a means of achieving complexity and variation whilst still designing a viable outcome, research and investigation into folding structures was conducted. Initially, the intention was to create a “flat pack” pavilion that would never need to be disassembled. This could be achieved through a type of water-bomb fold based on the origami magic ball. However, due to the number of hinges and various estabilising devices that would be required, a more structurally rigid solution was presented.  /Hseng Tai Ja Reng Lintner/

The build:
The winning entry was chosen by an external jury, consisting of invited tutors, practitioners and representatives from the Röhsska Museum where the pavilion was to be assembled. Students then organised themselves into teams with specialised tasks such as managing, logistics, coding, detailing, structural optimizing, technical drawing and public relations and had to perform the file-to-factory process of the winning proposal Archipelago conducted by the final assemblage.
