The aim of the diploma project was to design an urban strategy for regeneration of the railway brownfield Prague – Bubny. Being located right in the city centre creates a complicated situation with various difficult imputs to consider. Apart from obvious, the task consisted of working with derelict riverbanks, harmonic implementation of the complicated traffic situation in the area, creation valuable public spaces in terms of the whole city and called for creation of an exceptional residential neighbourhood within Prague’s context.
Owing to the transformation of our society into the post-industrial era, Prague gained an area of a huge potential and deep memory right in its centre – railway brownfield Bubny. The design is an intersection of several layers and proposes a new neighbourhood, a border area, with a different character.
The proposal is based on a couple of key programs, initiation points, the new neighbourhood organically grows from and eventually sets its order. The main element is a post-industrial park pervading through the site reminding of its history. The second pillar consists of vertical urban factories and other production services spread all over the area. Although the design works above a strict street pattern (study made by CMC Architects) it doesn’t imply a definite master plan. It only suggests a strategy for the development of the new neighbourhood and its position within the city context.
